ExploraTour On-Line Expedition: A Peek into the Lives of the Stars
Searching M4 for White Dwarfs.
The faint objects circled in the image on the left are white dwarfs in the globular cluster, M4. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and is 0.63 light years on a side. The brighter objects are yellow stars (much like the sun) and cool red stars.
If you click on this image, you will see a larger view of the globular cluster M4, 47 light years on a side and 7,000 light years away. M4 is predicted to contain some 40,000 white dwarfs out of its 100,000 stars.
