Cirrus clouds, thin, wispy, and feathery, are composed entirely of ice crystals. Cirrus clouds usually form at 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) and above, where the temperature is always far below freezing. These clouds are frequently blown about into feathery strands called mares' tails.
