Meet Alvin, the Deep Submergence Vehicle. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the US Navy operate Alvin. An eight-hour dive takes two scientists down about 14, 764 feet (4,500 meters). Compared to Mt. Whitney, the highest mountain in the lower 48 states, Alvin dives deeper than the mountain is high. Scientists use equipment on Alvin to photograph and video the seafloor and collect samples of living and non-living things.
