This photograph shows the asteroid: 253 Mathilde. Mathilde is a large chunk of rock nearly 60 kilometers (40 miles) across. It orbits the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Mathilde's surface is very dark and heavily cratered suggesting many impacts with other objects. The NEAR spacecraft took the photograph in 1999.
