"City of Lights" to Recreate Greeting
News story originally written on October 20, 1998
When
John Glenn became the
first American to orbit the Earth, he passed over the city of Perth,
Australia. People in Perth turned their lights on to honor him as he
passed over them. Glenn called Perth the "City of Lights".
Later this month, Glenn will be returning to space. People in Perth want
to try and recreate their salute when he passes over them again. NASA
told them that the Space Shuttle
Discovery will
pass over Perth around 12:32 a.m. on October 31.
One problem is that Discovery won't be as close to Perth as Glenn's
Friendship 7 capsule was in 1962. Another possible problem is that the
weather might not be as clear this time.
