Second Time's the Charm for Endeavour
News story originally written on December 5, 1998
The launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour was delayed until the early morning
hours of Friday, December 4th. Endeavour was scheduled to launch the day
before but the countdown was held at T-19 seconds because of an apparent
hydraulic system problem. Mission Control was unable to restart the
countdown before the launch window ended.
The mission of
STS-88 is to begin construction of
the Internation Space Station. On December 6th, astronaut Nancy Currie
will connect the Unity module carried by Endeavour with the previously
launched Russian module. Later in the week, astronauts Jerry Ross and
Jim Newman will conduct three spacewalks to connect the power, data, and
communications cables between the two modules.
Endeavour is scheduled to land in Florida on the night of December 15th.
