Second Time's the Charm for Endeavour
News story originally written on December 5, 1998
Space Shuttle Endeavour lifted off from Cape Canaveral at 3:35 a.m. EST
Friday, December 4th. The launch was delayed from the day before after
the countdown was held at T-19 seconds because of a possible problem with
the hydraulic system. Mission Control was able to confirm that there
wasn't a problem with the hydraulic system but they weren't able to resume
the countdown before the launch window ended.
The mission of
STS-88 is to begin construction
of the International Space Station. Mission Specialist Nancy Currie will
use Endeavour's robot arm to grab the Russian module and attach it to the
Unity module. Then Mission Specialists Jerry Ross and Jim Newman will
conduct three spacewalks to connect the power, data, and communications
cables.
Endeavour is scheduled to land in Florida on the night of December 15th.
