A comet or asteroid hit Jupiter in July 2009. The impactor exploded in Jupiter's atmosphere near the planet's South Pole. This infrared view was captured by the Keck telescope in Hawaii. The impact site (and a magnified inset) is towards the lower left corner of this image. Jupiter's Great Red Spot is visible at the far right edge.
