This image shows the path of the Mars Global Surveyor through the atmosphere (black ring) of Mars. Travel through the atmosphere slows the spacecraft in a process known as "aero-breaking". The trip through the atmosphere also provides information about the magnetic field of Mars shown here by the line with two peaks.
