This photograph taken, by the Viking Lander 1 on July 20, 1976, shows the first image received from Mars. It took twenty minutes to receive the data to make this image. In the lower right hand corner of the image one sees the footpad of the spacecraft. Viking Lander 1 touched down of the surface of Mars at a location named Chryse Planitia, the Plains of Gold.
