Gus Grissom
Gus Grissom was an American astronaut who was born on April 3, 1926, in
Indiana.
Before he became an astronaut, Grissom served as a fighter pilot in the
Korean War. He has flown over 4600 hours on aircraft.
Grissom became an astronaut in 1959. He was one of the first seven
astronauts of NASA. He has spent over 5 hours in space on 2 spaceflights.
In 1961, Grissom flew aboard Mercury 4. He became the second American to
make a sub-orbital flight into space during this 16 minutes flight. In
1965, Grissom piloted the first computerized spacecraft aboard Gemini
3.
Grissom was one of three astronauts to be killed in the Apollo 1 fire in
1967.
