Marsha Ivins is an American astronaut who was born on April 15, 1951, in
Maryland.
Before she became an astronaut, Ivins worked as an aerospace engineer.
Ivins became an astronaut in 1985. She has spent over 1009 hours in
space on four flights.
In 1990, Ivins made her first spaceflight aboard STS-32. The crew
deployed a communication satellite during this mission. She flew aboard
STS-46 in 1992. The first Tethered Satellite System was tested during
this flight.
Ivins made her third flight in 1994, aboard STS-62. The conducted
several experiments in materials science and manufacturing. Ivins flew
aboard STS-81 in 1997. The crew docked with the Russian Mir Space
Station for 8 days.
