Gennady Strekalov
Gennady Strekalov is a cosmonaut who was born on October 28, 1940, in
Moscow.
Strekalov became a cosmonaut in 1973. He has spent over 145 days in
space on five spaceflights.
In 1980, Strekalov flew aboard Soyuz T-3. The crew visited the Salyut 6 space
station.
Strekalov made his second flight aboard Soyuz T-8 in 1983. The spacecraft radar had
failed and the crew had to return to Earth. Later that year, Strekalov was on
the aborted mission of Soyuz T-10. Ninety seconds before launch the base rocket
of the spacecraft broke out into a fire.
Strekalov had more luck in 1984, when he flew aboard Soyuz T-11. The crew spent
eight days aboard the Salyut 7 space station. Strekalov made his last flight
aboard the Mir Space Station in 1990. He spent 4 months performing several
spacewalks.
