John Swigert
John Swigert was an American astronaut who was born on August 30, 1931,
in Colorado.
Before he became an astronaut, Swigert was a Air Force pilot.
Swigert became an astronaut in 1966. He has spent over 142 hours in
space on one spaceflight. In 1970, Swigert flew aboard the unlucky
Apollo 13. One of the tanks on the command module exploded and the crew
was forced to use the lunar module as a lifeboat to make it back to Earth
safely. This was the first deep space abort.
Swigert left NASA in 1977. He died of cancer in 1982.
