Roald Amundsen
Roald Amundsen was a polar explorer from Norway. He is famous for leading the first trip of people to make it to the South Pole. Well, they were helped by 16 sled dogs too! That trip took place from 1910-1912.
Before that, Amundsen led the first trip to make it across the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. And people had been trying to do that since the time of Columbus!
In 1926, Amundsen, took part in the first crossing of the Arctic in an airship. Two years later, he was flying again to rescue missing members of another explorer's team and Amundsen disappeared.
Amundsen was a very brave and strong man. He has many land features in the Arctic and the Antarctic named after him and even a crater on the Moon!
