View from our home

This is a view of the Adelie penguin breeding colony at Cape Royds in Antarctica. In the foreground you see Shackleton’s hut. Sir Ernest Shackleton and his team of explorers tried and failed to cross the continent of Antarctica. They were stranded for over 2 years, from 1916-1918. The lesser know story is of the rest of their expedition party survived in this hut for 2 years, waiting for their team to complete the trip. They had no way of knowing that Shackleton would never make it. In the meantime they endured many hardships traveling over the ice laying supply depots in anticipation of the main party’s arrival. The hut remains as they left it, with equipment, supplies, clothing, and food on the stove. It has been perfectly preserved for almost 100 years in this frozen environment with no dust, mold, insects or fungus to destroy it. It is now an historical hut, run by the government of New Zealand.
