The Stray Dog Problem
Hola again,
Over the last two weeks, I have seen many dogs linger outside the hotel, restaurants and on the pedestrian mall hoping for a morsel of food. A little female we started calling Juanita waits for us every morning in front of the hotel and joins us on our morning run in hope of a leftover empanada or other scraps from last night’s dinner.
All throughout Chile are packs of stray dogs. While they look filthy and hungry, many of them are beautiful pure-breds who obviously belonged to somebody in an earlier life. Coming from Boulder, Colorado, where people are crazy about their dogs, it is hard for me to imagine that somebody would just discard their pet, no matter what. And because these dogs have no home and run free, the problem of breeding goes unchecked and unneutered dogs multiply.
