Highlights of the Leonid Meteor Shower
News story originally written on November 23, 1999
The Leonid meteor shower is over! But scientists saw all kinds of neat things on November 18, 1999. One scientist videotaped a meteorite crashing into the Moon!
People living in Europe had the best view. They saw over 70 meteors an hour! Those of us in North America saw 20 to 40 per hour.
NASA scientists also flew a weather balloon during the shower. They are hoping that one of the meteoroids was caught by their instrument. A meteoroid is smaller than a grain of sand, but travels really fast. That's why they look so bright!
