What does it take to become an astronaut?
To become an astronaut, you have to be healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally. Men and women can be astronauts, but you must legally be an adult!
One of the basic qualifications needed is at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or math from an accredited institution. Three years of related experience must follow the degree. An advanced degree is of course desirable.
Those hoping to fly the shuttle as a pilot must have at least 1,000 hours of experience in jet aircraft, and they need better vision than those applying to be mission specialists.
Competition is tough! An average of 4,000 people apply each year for the 20 positions that become free every 2 years. For more specific information and a really long application, write to the Astronaut Selection Office, NASA Johnson Space Center, Housto
n, TX 77058. Also, the movie the Right Stuff provides a look at past astronaut selection.
