Sif
One of the volcanoes on the planet of
Venus is named after the
Norse goddess Sif. Most of the planetary features of Venus are named after
famous women and goddesses . Venus is the only planet named after a
goddess, the
Roman goddess of love and beauty.
In Norse mythology, Sif was
the wife of the god of thunder,
Thor. Sif had long, blonde hair. Out of nastiness, the Norse god Loki cut it. But when Thor discovered this, he could
not control his anger and grabbed Loki. Loki cried for mercy and promised Thor that he would get craftsmen to make some hair of finely spun gold.
