Scott made his first spaceflight aboard Gemini 8 in 1966. This was the first American spaceflight abort due to a thruster malfunction. In 1969, Scott piloted the command module of Apollo 9.
Scott made his last spaceflight as commander of Apollo 15. He became the seventh person to walk on the moon as he and astronaut James Irwin explored the lunar surface.
Scott left NASA in 1977.
