The Chumash Tribe

The Chumash tribe lived in California. They hunted and gathered food instead of farming.

They thought the stars, Moon, Sun and the planets were gods. The Sun was most important to the Chumash, then the Moon and then Venus.

They named the stars. They also kept track of the Sun and Moon by marking wooden sticks. The Chumash knew about things like solstices. They also painted pictures of what they saw in the sky. Can you draw or paint a picture of something in the sky?
