The Stones of Carnac
The
stones of Carnac, France, are very famous because there are a lot of them and because they are so old! The oldest stones found in Carnac are from about 4,500 B.C. That's older than the stones at
Stonehenge!
The stones that stand upright are called Menhir stones. Sometimes these stones are in very long rows or in circles. Some people think they were signs like our modern-day street signs. Others think they marked a graveyard. And still others think they served as astronomy observatories.
Carnac also has Dolmens. These are ancient burial grounds that look a lot like stone forts!
