Sif
In Norse mythology, Sif was the wife of
Thor, the mighty god of
thunder. Sif was a very loyal wife. She was considered the symbol of
fidelity. Once the malicious god Loki cut the long blond tresses of Sif.
When Thor discovered this, he could not control his anger and grabbed Loki, threatening to break his bones.
Loki cried for mercy and promised Thor that he would
convince the dwarfs to craft very refined hair of pure gold, which would
grow like natural hair from the head of Sif.
One of the volcanoes on the planet of
Venus is named after the Norse
goddess Sif. Most of the planetary features of Venus are named after famous
women and goddesses . The probable reason for naming the features of Venus
according to such criterion is because Venus is the only planet named after
a goddess, the
Roman goddess of love and beauty.
