I am a university professor involved in studies of the concentration and type of particles contained within clouds. It is important to know these things in order to say how often clouds produce precipitation and to determine how much sunlight clouds reflect. Both precipitation and sunlight reflection influence the planet's climate and weather.
My training was in chemistry, and that background translated into an interest in chemical cycles of nutrients and the interaction of nutrient cycles with the hydrological cycle. Later on, I worked with a physicist who studied the atmospheric cycles of fixed nitrogen compounds (ammonia and nitric acid). That collaboration set a pattern for subsequent studies of the chemistry of sulfur compounds, again with an emphasis on how the atmospheric sulfur cycle interacts with the hydrological cycle.
