Valkiries
It has been suggested that the northern lights, the
aurora, represented the reflections of the shields of the Valkiries in Norse mythology. The Valkiries, whose name means "Chooser of the Fallen" were female warriors and special assistants of
Odin, the Sky god.
They were sent by Odin to choose which of the slain warriors would be escorted to Valhalla. In Valhalla, the dead warriors were welcomed with drink.
Valhalla was part of Asgard, the home of the gods. Asgard's walls were made of shields and it roof of spears.
